The Learning Center is celebrating the diversity around us for Pride Month. We have a variety of titles across many genres for everyone to check out. For younger grades we have graphic novels like The Deep Dark and Blue by Niki Smith. For real life heroes, there is Megan Rapinoe's autobiography, One Life. We also offer a variety of non fiction titles like Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg .
Usually the library is a pretty quiet place, but on Tuesday it was anything but quiet. Mrs. Johnston is a big fan of the Harry Potter series, and has a collection of 'merch'. Everyone's favorite is the "Monster Book of Monsters" that sits on her desk. Sometimes, students are lucky enough to get glimpse of what the Monster book in action looks like. With the flick of a button, it will come alive, it's book jaws chomping down on any fingers that get too close. During Tuesday's WIN block a group of 8th graders were curious to see what the switch on the back does. And being curious, they of course, switched it on. The Book of Monsters began chomping it's jaws, accompanied by a loud electronic roaring. Ms. Bebey, who was covering WIN block while Mrs. Johnston took her lunch break, stepped in to stop the commotion. Unfortunately, she could not find the off switch. The book continued to roar and bite, and the library, already full of students for WIN block, got louder and louder. With no other options, she took the book off the desk, carried it upstairs past the highschool principal and librarians and through the highschool library to find Mrs. Johnston, who finally quieted the beast.
We are excited to once again be offering maker space activities during WIN block! We will be starting with 7th and 8th grade and will later open it up to 6th grade.
